Drowning in Guilt

God’s Word2 Corinthians 2:1-11  (The Message)

God’s Message to me: (My interpretation of what God is saying in these verses)

Guilt is an emotional response to the awareness that you have compromised acceptable standards, either yours or those you have become aware of in My Word, and you feel responsible.   drowning It does no one any good for you to drown yourself in remorse.  Instead, take steps to make it right.  If you stole—admit it and pay it back.  If you lied—admit it and express regret.  If you gossiped—stop and admit it. If you murdered—fess up and take your punishment.  Guilt serves a good purpose to help a person become aware of their responsibility for their words and deed.  Forgiveness erases guilt.  But the guilty party often cannot forgive themselves.  That is drowning in guilt.

If you have guilt from past actions do your best to make it right.  Some things can never be undone but to drown oneself in regret is to make yourself useless to yourself and society.  Everyone has guilt for one thing or another.  Let guilt do its work to bring you to sorrow for your action, make it right as best you can, and get back into the ball game of life—giving it all you got.  Guilt lets you know what you don’t want to do anymore.  Now set it aside and move forward.

Jesus death as a sacrifice for your sins removes your guilt from MY sight.  Friends, it is just as though you never sinned.  Now everyone sins but those who experience guilt respond in sorrow and want to make it right—to be forgiven.  When Peter preached on the day of Pentecost and the people realized their guilt, they asked him “What shall we do?”  His answer begins in Acts 2:38 where he tells them how to secure forgiveness for their sins.  That same forgiveness is available to all who follow Peter’s answer to this day.  Guilt was not meant to drown you in sorrow but to bring you to Jesus for forgiveness.

God’s Question: Do you have any guilt that is holding you back?

God’s Promise: Arise and be baptized and wash away your sin?

My Prayer to God:

I Praise You for Jesus’ love that took him to the cross.

I am Sorry my sin was part of the reason He had to die.

Thank You for the beauty of Your forgiveness.

Please Help Me help others be released from guilt to forgiveness.
