What’s the Big Deal about Baptism?

God’s Word: Romans 6:1-14  (The Message)

God’s Message to me: (My interpretation of what God is saying in these verses)

Why all this controversy about baptism! Baptism Consider what My Word says—that is where you get straight answers.  “When you went under the water, you left the old country of sin behind; when you came up out of the water, you entered into the new country of grace—a new life in a new land.  That is what baptism into the life of Jesus means.  When you are lowered into the water, it is like the burial of Jesus; when you are raised up out of the water, it is like the resurrection of Jesus.  You know that when Jesus was raised from the dead it was a signal of the end of death-as-the-end.  When Jesus died, He took sin down with Him, but alive He brought ME down to you.”

Some teach that baptism isn’t necessary or that you can be sprinkled instead of immersed.  What do you think after reading this passage? The word baptism in the original language it was written meant “immerse.”  Immersion creates the picture I intended.  When you go “down under” the water it pictures washing your sins away, (leaving the old country of sin behind). When you come up “out of” the water is a picture of entering into Jesus grace—forgiveness.  Can it be any clearer?  It saddens Me that so many make this into a controversy, saying baptism isn’t really necessary and is just an outward show of an inward grace.  If My Word is your guide there is no controversy.

Controversy is generated by the opinions of people, not by My Word.  I laid out the instructions about baptism as clear as possible.  Acts 2:38 is where the people who believed the message of Jesus asked Peter what they should do about their sin.  He said, “Change your life. Turn to God and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, so your sins are forgiven. Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

God’s Question: How do you hope to get rid of your sin?

God’s Promise:  My forgiveness gives you a new lease on life.

My Prayer to God:

I Praise You for Jesus sacrifice so we could be forgiven.

I am Sorry we too often give in to sin.

Thank You for your amazing grace that forgives and forgets.

Please Help Me forgive and forget the shortcomings of others.
