The Lure of Flattery

God’s Word: Mark 12:35-44

God’s Message to me: (My interpretation of what God is saying in these verses)

Sad to say but the lure of flattery even goes so far as to the offering plate in church.   flattery-will-get-you-far_1Giving to further My kingdom on earth is commendable but some give just to show off to others.  They make a big deal of what they are giving and enjoy the praise and admiration they receive from others.  Oh it is so easy for people to give in to hypocrisy.  That which they could condemn in another they find themselves doing.  Flatter does that to a person.  They see another being praised and they long for that same praise.

That is why I say that it easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven.   Not many people can manage riches before caving to hypocrisy.  Giving should be done out of your abundance—not your leftovers.  The rich often lavish themselves in the latest fashions and belongings and if any is left they give to the poor.  That is not kingdom living.  Jesus set the example by giving His all for those who didn’t even care about Him.  Who gives that way today?  Very few!

In today’s passage the rich made a big show of giving their offerings.  One poor widow came in and put in two small coins.  Jesus called His disciples over and said “The truth is that this poor widow gave more to the collection than all the others put together.  All the others gave what they’ll never miss, she gave extravagantly what she couldn’t afford—she gave her all.”   Your unselfish giving on behalf of others gives deep satisfaction in the very core of your being.  When you do it to make a show you lose the blessing I give to the humble giver.  The flattery you receive is your only reward.

God’s Question: What motivates your giving?

God’s Promise: The extravagant giver receives  My extravagant reward.

My Prayer to God:

I Praise You for Christ’s unselfish offering on our behalf.

I am Sorry I am not more eager to give unselfishly.

Thank You for Christ’s example of how to give to others.

Please help me set self aside and be Your faithful ambassador.
