God’s Word: Mark 6:14-29

God’s Message to me: (My interpretation of what God is saying in these verses)

John, called the baptizer, was a rare breed.  John spoke the truth not counting the cost of what it might mean to his own safety.  There are so few like John, down through the centuries.  He realized the far-reaching implications of letting sin continue without a rude awakening.  John’s teachings were working on the heart of King Herod.  Though he didn’t like what John was saying, because it made him feel guilty, he could not stop himself from coming back to hear more.

When the guilt got too great to bear Herod put John in prison. head on platter He was also egged on by his Brother Phillip’s wife, whom Herod was involved with in an adulterous affair.  When John openly exposed this affair as adultery she was infuriated.  She began looking for occasion to get rid of John.  When Herod threw a big party she sent her daughter to dance for the guests.  It was quite a dance—may have put Miley Cyrus to shame.  Herod, dazzled by her dance and in his drunken state, offered her anything she wanted, up to half of his kingdom.  She conferred with her mother and requested John’s head on a platter.

Herod sobered up fast but unwilling to lose face with his guests, he caved and gave her this request.  Then when Jesus came along preaching and teaching Herod was sure it was John come back to life.  It goes to show that you can’t ignore sin and hope the consequences will go away.  Truth cannot be squelched for it is the very lifeblood of living.  Sin is like cancer that chokes out the life of the sinner.  You may ignore it for a period but be assured that it will ruin your life.

God’s Question: Are you ignoring sin or speaking out against it?

God’s Promise: I give you peace in the midst of life’s storms.
