Not a Happy Ending

15 Feb

God’s Word:  Matthew 5:31, 32:  Jesus said, “Remember the Scripture that says, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him do it legally, and giving her divorce papers and her legal rights?’  Too many of you are using that as a cover for selfishness and whim, pretending to be righteous just because you are ‘legal.” Please, no more pretending.  If you divorce your wife, you’re responsible for making her an adulteress (unless she has already made herself that by sexual promiscuity). And if you marry such a divorced adulteress, you’re automatically an adulterer yourself.  You can’t use legal cover to mask a moral failure.

Jesus’ Message to Me: (My interpretation of what Jesus is saying in these verses)

This passage comes directly on the heels of My admonition against lust.  Lust has no satisfaction, no broken_heart_2saturation point; there will always be another, greener side of the fence. The solution is not to seek the greener grass but to nurture and care for the grass in your own pasture.

Divorce is only the tip of the iceberg.  In previous verses I have been talking about forgiveness and how God takes your treatment of all others personally.  Divorce is the result of all these other passages being ignored.  The hatred and bitterness that comes out in a divorce is unfathomable.

Friends—it does not have to end in divorce.  Romans 12:17-19  The Message  “Don’t hit back; discover beauty in everyone. If you’ve got it in you, get along with everybody. Don’t insist on getting even; that’s not for you to do. “I’ll do the judging,” says God. “I’ll take care of it.” Instead of divorce, go back to the drawing board, God’s Word, and follow God’s advice, forgive, love, cherish, rekindle, and avoid lust in all the forms that have become so readily available today.  You can choose to have a happy ending to your disagreements instead of an unhappy ending of your marriage.

Jesus’ Question for Me: Will you let God’s teachings guide your decision about divorce or creating a heavenly marriage?

Jesus’ Promise to Me:  If you treat your spouse as you would treat Me, you will find that your marriage can become heavenly.

My Prayer to God:

I praise You for Your Word that heals and purifies relationships.

I am sorry for too often going with my emotions instead of Your word.

Thank You Your teachings that can turn chaos into a happy ending.

Help me to treat all others as though I were interacting with You.
