The Heart Test

God’s Word:  Proverbs 27:17-27

God’s Message to Me:

The purity of human hearts is tested by giving them a little fame.  Everyone wants to be somebody—to be respected—admired and listened to with rapt attention.  Few past the fame test.  Fame too often goes to the head and creates a monster.  King Saul is a good example.  Reluctant to become king he then lets the power go to his head and jealously tries to retain all power.

Just as water mirrors your face, so your face mirrors your heart.  By talking with a person a few moments you can see right into their heart.  Is the conversation all about them—drawing attention to self?  The heart is a fragile yet vital organ that keeps the whole body functioning.  But when the heart turns to lusting for fame—it is on a downward spiral.

Fame—used to serve others—not elevate self—passes the heart test.  Few there are who have used their fame in this manner.  Fame is a dangerous and deceptive position to be in.  When given power over others one is tempted, and often yields, to Lording it over others instead of helping.  They easily forget that the one who is greatest is the servant of all.

God’s Question to Me:  Are you seeking to be respected—admired and listened to so that you can help others or to satisfy your own longings?

God’s Promise to Me:   The one who Lords it over others will ultimately be Lorded over by others—without mercy.

My Song to God:    If Your heart Keeps Right     by Lizzie DeArmond   1912.

If the dark shadows gather as you go along,
Do not grieve for their coming; sing a cheery song.
There is joy for the taking; it will soon be light.
Ev’ry cloud wears a rainbow if your heart keeps right.

Refrain

If your heart keeps right,
If your heart keeps right,
There’s a song of gladness in the darkest night.
If your heart keeps right,
If your heart keeps right,
Ev’ry cloud will wear a rainbow,
If your heart keeps right.

Is your life just a tangle full of toil and care?
Smile a bit as you journey, others’ burdens share.
You’ll forget all your troubles, making their lives bright.
Skies will grow blue and sunny, if your heartkeeps right.

Refrain

If your heart keeps right,
If your heart keeps right,
There’s a song of gladness in the darkest night.
If your heart keeps right,
If your heart keeps right,
Ev’ry cloud will wear a rainbow,
If your heart keeps right.

There are blossoms of gladness, ’neath the winter’s snow.
From the gloom and the darkness come the morning glow.
Never give up the battle, you will win the fight;
Gain the rest of the Victor, if your heart keeps right.

Refrain

If your heart keeps right,
If your heart keeps right,
There’s a song of gladness in the darkest night.
If your heart keeps right,
If your heart keeps right,
Ev’ry cloud will wear a rainbow,
If your heart keeps right.
