#11 Hear Instruction

God’s Word:  Proverbs 23:12

God’s Message to Me:

You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.  You can give instructions but following them is up to the one receiving them.  Time is precious!  The one receiving instructions must discipline themselves to listen and learn—not wasting their own time or the time of the instructor.

An undisciplined person is a drain on the family, the community, the country, and the world.  The path to developing integrity of character is laden with many disciplines.  Ignore discipline—sacrifice integrity.  All learning requires discipline.  Listen—absorb—study—do your homework.  You discipline yourself in order to learn or you reap the consequences while sitting in prison.

Not all knowledge is beneficial in developing integrity.  My guideline for the kind of knowledge to pursue is found in Philippians 4:8 “Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.”

God’s Question to Me:  Are you sifting through the mountains of instruction out there and filling your mind with only the qualities of integrity that I suggest in Philippians 4:8?

God’s Promise to Me:   Garbage in—garbage out!  The instruction you invite into your mind will be lived out in your life.  Choose wisely.

My Song to God:  Yield Not to Temptation    by Horatio R Palmer   1868

Yield not to temptation, for yielding is sin;
Each vict’ry will help you some other to win;
Fight manfully onward, dark passions subdue;
Look ever to Jesus, He’ll carry you through.

Refrain:
Ask the Savior to help you,
Comfort, strengthen, and keep you;
He is willing to aid you,
He will carry you through.

Shun evil companions, bad language disdain,
God’s name hold in rev’rence, nor take it in vain;
Be thoughtful and earnest, kindhearted and true;
Look ever to Jesus, He’ll carry you through.

Refrain:
Ask the Savior to help you,
Comfort, strengthen, and keep you;
He is willing to aid you,
He will carry you through

To him that o’ercometh, God giveth a crown,
Through faith we will conquer, though often cast down;
He who is our Savior, our strength will renew;
Look ever to Jesus, He’ll carry you through.

Refrain:
Ask the Savior to help you,
Comfort, strengthen, and keep you;
He is willing to aid you,
He will carry you through
