Don’t Mind Your Own Business

2 Apr

God’s Word:  Matthew 7:12  Jesus said, “Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior.  Ask yourself, what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them.  Add up God’s Law and Prophets and this is what you get.”

Jesus’ Message to Me: (My interpretation of what Jesus is saying to me through these verses)

Don’t go through life minding your own business!  Be on the lookout for ways you can help others and then get busy.  When you reach out to others there is something that happens deep within your heart—that can happen in no other way. It is a soothing of one’s own spirit that does not come by receiving blessings but by giving them.  The spoiled child receives, receives and receives and then wants even more.  They have been denied teaching about this wonderful aspect of living that can never be attained apart from “giving.”

This simple statement is really very profound.  Look at the state of the world today.  Did it get to this place because of following this guide or by spitting in the face of it? Why is it so difficult to follow this rule-of-thumb guide for behavior?  This is a taught and learned skill so we must assume it is not being modeled and taught.  I hear it said to children to help them “straighten up,” but the very adults who spoke those words do not follow the rule themselves.  Children do what you do—not what you say.

To change your society you must grab the initiative and get busy.  What immediate needs are in your neighborhood—your community—your nation—the world?  You can’t meet all those needs but don’t worry about what you can’t do but what you can do.  Remember, loved ones, I take your treatment of others, all others, personally.  I see your deeds of love and touch your spirit with deep peace and joy.  Your treatment of others is your connection to Me.

Jesus’ Question for Me: Will you grab the initiative and reach out to others in need as you would have them reach out to you in your need?

Jesus’ Promise to Me:  In reaching out to others you are reaching out to Me—and I am there with you to give strength and peace.

My Song to Jesus:    “Others”  by Charles D Meigs  1917

Lord, help me live from day to day
In such a self-forgetful way
That even when I kneel to pray
My prayer shall be for—Others.

Refrain
Others, Lord, yes others,
Let this my motto be,
Help me to live for others,
That I may live like Thee.

Help me in all the work I do
To ever be sincere and true
And know that all I’d do for You
Must needs be done for—Others.

Refrain
Others, Lord, yes others,
Let this my motto be,
Help me to live for others,
That I may live like Thee.

Let “Self” be crucified and slain
And buried deep: and all in vain
May efforts be to rise again,
Unless to live for—Others.

Refrain
Others, Lord, yes others,
Let this my motto be,
Help me to live for others,
That I may live like Thee.

And when my work on earth is done,
And my new work in Heav’n’s begun,
May I forget the crown I’ve won,
While thinking still of—Others.

Refrain
Others, Lord, yes others,
Let this my motto be,
Help me to live for others,
That I may live like Thee.
