Jesus’ Prayer Formula

13 Mar

God’s Word:  (The Message) Matthew 6:7-13  Jesus said,  “The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They’re full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don’t fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:

Our Father in heaven,
Reveal who you are.
Set the world right;
Do what’s best— as above, so below.
Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
You’re in charge!
You can do anything you want!
You’re ablaze in beauty!
Yes. Yes. Yes.”

Jesus’ Message to Me: (My interpretation of what Jesus is saying to me through these verses)

Prayer is your knock on the door of the heart of God.  He is always at home and eager to talk with you.  Unfortunately, too often people aren’t seeking advice or wisdom from God, merely pounding on His door, holding out their basket for Him to fill it up.  They simply barge in to tell Him what to do for them—and make it snappy.

I tried to make it as simple as possible by stating simply the way to come before God in prayer.  Come to honor Him—seeking wisdom to know His heart and will for the world and your life.  It is recognizing that God knows best—not telling Him what you think is best.  Just tell Him your concerns and trust Him to make wise decisions.

Too often people tend to ignore a very important part of prayer—forgiveness.  When a deed of loving kindness is left undone it is something owed but not paid.  Therefore, you need God’s forgiveness.  You are quick to overlook (forgive) your own slights—and quick to begrudge another for theirs.  God allows you freedom is setting your own forgiveness scale with him.  To the extent that you forgive others—He is most willing and eager to forgive you.

Recognize that life on earth is a battle for your soul.  Satan’s marketing is always top-notch.  He never runs out of ways to lure you into his playing-field while allowing you to think you are in control.  Give God charge of your life and devote yourselves to honoring Him in whatever you do—spending your time, your finances, your emotions, your strength and energy.  Knock on the door of God’s heart often and allow Him to choose what to put in your basket of wants.  He knows best and wants only the best for you.  Yes, yes, and yes!

Jesus’ Question for Me: Are your prayers seeking God’s wisdom or giving Him your opinions?

Jesus’ Promise to Me:  Prayer humbly offered to God, seeking his wisdom, is always answered.  (The rubber meets the road when you choose to follow his advice—or go your own way.)

My Song to Jesus:

Our Father who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass
against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power
and the glory.
For ever and ever
Amen.
