Great Leaders

God’s Word: I Peter 5

God’s Message to Me: (My interpretation of what God is saying to me through these verses)

Great leaders don’t throw their weight around and make demands.  No, they can be likened to a shepherd who tenderly cares for his sheep.  He has the utmost concern for his flock and put himself at great risk to see to their well-being.  The best shepherds are more like the servant to their sheep.  The flock prospers under the care of this shepherd.  He leads them to safe pasture, beside streams of clear water, and at night gathers them all in a safe place where he is always on guard.

Great leaders are those who act spontaneously on behalf of their “flock.”  They are not merely trying to climb the corporate ladder but devoting themselves to helping others be all they can be.  They are content with who they are and don’t put on airs to impress others.  They keep a cool head and stay alert—always keeping their guard up.

Jesus was the world’s best example of a great leader.   He totally put Himself in harm’s way for his flock—all of mankind—to the point of His actual death.  If you are a leader of others, and you all are to one extent or other, follow the example of Jesus.  He said that He came to serve, not to be served.  He didn’t say “hey—you, wash my feet.”  No, instead He got a towel and a basin of water and stooped to wash the feet of His followers.  Then He told them—go and do likewise.  No, you don’t have to go around washing feet but the meaning is “find a need and fill it.”  That is what a great leader looks like.

God’s Question for Me: Do you see how you can be a great leader, no matter your position in life?

God’s Promise to Me: My strong hand is on you and I will promote you at the right time. (vs. 6)

My Prayer to God:

Adoration:  You are my Shepherd—I have all that I need in You.

Confession:  I have often failed to care for others lovingly as a shepherd.  I’m sorry.

Thanksgiving:  Thank you for your forgiveness and constant watch-care.

Supplication: Help me to follow the example of Jesus and care for others.

My Song to God:

Savior, like a shepherd lead us,

much we need thy tender care;

in thy pleasant pastures feed us,

for our use thy folds prepare.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Thou hast bought us, thine we are.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Thou hast bought us, thine we are.

We are thine, thou dost befriend us,

be the guardian of our way;

keep thy flock, from sin defend us,

seek us when we go astray.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Hear, O hear us when we pray.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Hear, O hear us when we pray.

Thou hast promised to receive us,

poor and sinful though we be;

thou hast mercy to relieve us,

grace to cleanse and power to free.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

We will early turn to thee.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

We will early turn to thee.

Early let us seek thy favor,

early let us do thy will;

blessed Lord and only Savior,

with thy love our bosoms fill.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Thou hast loved us, love us still.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Thou hast loved us, love us still.
