Giving Elevates the Spirit

God’s Word: John 6

God’s message to me:

People are forever the same.  As it was in the days of Jesus so it is today.  Now, as then, people support and follow the one who gives them a free handout.  The bottom line to all of humanity is “what’s in it for me.”  Jesus came to earth to show mankind a different way of thinking and living. Jesus demonstrated that it is better to give than to receive.  But most people can’t get beyond the pleasure of receiving.  But giving elevates the spirit of mankind onto a different plain—a superior source of motivation and pleasure.

Everyone is invited onto My plain of living but only a few step up to accept it.  They find it so hard to set self aside. I’ve heard many say “Once I get all I want, then I will have enough to share.”  Or they say “When I win the lottery I will give the Lord a large gift.”  Or, the most often heard statement “I have to stick up for number one—myself.”

There will never come a point when you feel you have “enough” because the more you receive, the more you want.  I call mankind to follow the example of Jesus—set self aside and give of yourself for others—but not to the point that you are simply enabling the person. Help others step up to living on My plain—where you do all you do as unto Jesus.  Jesus accepts all you do for others as done unto Him.

God’s Question for me:  What have you done today to benefit another—for My sake?

God’s Promise to me: John 6:47  Whoever believes in me has real life, eternal life.

My prayer to God:

Unworthy though I am—I am grateful for Your forgiveness and grace.

I’m sorry that I too often think only about myself instead of how I can serve your through serving others.

I’m thankful that you don’t give up on me—but your grace washes over my unworthiness and makes me whole in Your sight.

Please help me to daily reach for Your plain of living—living for Jesus instead of self.

My Song to God:

Living for Jesus, a life that is true,
Striving to please Him in all that I do;
Yielding allegiance, glad-hearted and free,
This is the pathway of blessing for me.

O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to Thee,
For Thou, in Thy atonement, didst give Thyself for me;
I own no other Master, my heart shall be Thy throne;
My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone.

Living for Jesus Who died in my place,
Bearing on Calv’ry my sin and disgrace;
Such love constrains me to answer His call,
Follow His leading and give Him my all.

Living for Jesus, wherever I am,
Doing each duty in His holy Name;
Willing to suffer affliction and loss,
Deeming each trial a part of my cross.

Living for Jesus through earth’s little while,
My dearest treasure, the light of His smile;
Seeking the lost ones He died to redeem,
Bringing the weary to find rest in Him.

    Greetings from Wordwise Hymns. Thanks for the devotional. I posted an article on Thomas Chisholm’s gospel song this morning. A challenge to serve the Lord in practical ways.
